2017 Honda Civic Type R spied with extra details on display
The next-generation Honda Civic Type R has been spied undergoing hot weather testing in Spain.
Unfortunately this Civic Type R prototype didn't take the opportunity to disrobe as it ventured into warmer climes, as the vehicle seen here is wearing roughly the same amount of camouflage as the car spotted on the Nurburgring last year.
It does, however, reveal a few extra details that weren't seen on the earlier car. Up front, some camouflage has been stripped away from the car's fascia revealing the Type R's fog lights and its surrounds. There's also a bonnet scoop towards the base the windscreen.
Apart from the alloy wheels pinched from the current Type R, other details, such as the flared front and rear wheel arches, prominent rear spoiler, cross-drilled front brakes, and triple exhaust setup, seem to be unchanged.
Under the bonnet, the new Type R will likely use an updated version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that powers today's Europe-only Civic Type R hatch.
In its current guise, the 2.0-litre turbo generates 231kW of power and 400Nm of torque. This motor is drives the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, and allowing today's model to complete the 0-100km/h standard in 5.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 270km/h.
The new car will stick with the front-wheel drive layout, despite the fact that 257kW/470Nm Ford Focus RS and 221kW/380Nm Euro-spec Volkswagen Golf R both employ all-wheel drive.
Australia
The new UK-built Civic Type R has been confirmed for Australia, with a launch expected by the end of 2017.
