Hyundai Australia celebrates 30 years with Santa Fe, Tucson: V6 returns to Santa Fe for new special

Hyundai has revealed the Tucson and Santa Fe  ‘30’ Special Editions, celebrating the brand’s 30th anniversary in Australia.

Limited to just 300 examples of each model, the pair of special editions bring additional equipment, styling and engine upgrades over their base cars.

Starting at $37,750 plus on-road costs, the Hyundai Tucson ‘30’ Special Edition is $4100 pricier than the ActiveX variant on which it’s based, adding various styling enhancements and an exclusive colour.

The Tucson ‘30’ also features the 130kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbo petrol from the higher-grade Elite and Highlander models, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission - both things the ActiveX doesn’t even offer as an option.

For the extra four grand, the Tucson ‘30’ adds matte-black 19-inch Rays alloy wheels, matte-grey side steps and quad exhaust tips integrated into a new rear bumper.

The ‘Ash Blue’ metallic exterior paint is exclusive to the Tucson ‘30’.

Other features carried over from the ActiveX specification include a rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, LED daytime-running lights (DRLs), automatic headlights, fog lights, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Aux and USB inputs, leather-trimmed seats, two-way electric lumbar support for the driver along with electric folding and heated side mirrors.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Santa Fe ‘30’ Special Edition uses the Active variant as its donor car, but starts $1060 below than the automatic-equipped Active at $40,790 plus on-roads.

Headlining the Santa Fe ‘30’ is the debut of Hyundai’s 3.3-litre MPi V6 in Australia, producing 199kW of power and 318Nm of torque, driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission

By comparison, the Santa Fe Active is powered by a 138kW/241Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine driving all four wheels.

Added extras on the Santa Fe ‘30’ include heated exterior mirrors, chrome exterior door handles, rear privacy glass, 19-inch alloy wheels finished in dark grey, exclusive ‘Mineral Blue’ metallic exterior paint, and unique ‘30’ badging.

The Santa Fe ‘30’ also receives a leather-appointed interior, dual-zone climate control and a cooled glovebox, and is the only model in the range to feature a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Equipment carried over from the Active variant include LED daytime-running lights, rear-view camera, automatic headlights, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Aux and USB audio input, front and rear air-conditioning and a digital speedometer.

Both the Tucson and Santa Fe ‘30’ Special Editions are available to order now.

V6 here to stay?

The return of a V6 option in the Santa Fe will be a welcome change for many buyers, but will it stick around beyond this special-edition run?

Speaking with CarAdvice today, Hyundai Australia communications manager Guido Schenken said that while the V6 is for now unique to special '30' Santa Fe, but that could change if demand is there.

"Based on dealer and customer feedback, we may look at bringing it on as a fulltime ActiveX model," Schenken said.
