BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition revealed, five confirmed for Australia

If the 2016 BMW i8 hybrid sports car wasn’t already exclusive enough, the brand has just confirmed an ultra-exclusive Protonic Red Edition - and only five are coming Down Under.

Starting at $299,000 plus on-road costs, the special i8 features the bespoke Protonic Red metallic with contrasting Frozen Grey metallic accents, riding on 20-inch W-spoke alloy wheels.

Inside, the i8 Protonic Red Edition is further distinguished by ‘Spheric’ leather trim with red highlights and red double stitching, along with exclusive carbon-fibre and ceramic trim highlights.

The added features are rounded out by door sill plates with ‘Protonic Red Edition’ badging.

The i8 Protonic Red Edition is powered by the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the ‘standard’ i8, featuring a 170kW/320Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine driving the rear wheels, mated to a 96kW/250Nm electric motor turning the front wheels.

Combined outputs are 266kW/570Nm, while claimed fuel consumption is 2.1L/100km on the combined cycle.

The i8 is capable of travelling 31 kilometres on pure-electric power at speeds of up to 120km/h.

BMW claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.4 seconds.

The five special red i8's have all been allocated to dealers, though none have been sold yet.
