Melbourne’s Punt Road becomes permanent clearway

The Victorian government has implemented 24-hour clearways on Punt Road, one of the busiest routes in Melbourne.

Starting from today, the new no-parking zones will operated seven days a week from Alexandra Avenue to Gladstone Street on the east side, and Alexandra Avenue to Union Street on the west side, which should help to cut congestion on the busy north-south corridor.

This follows the announcement made last month that the stretch of road would become a permanent 24/7 clearway.

Prior to this week, the clearways only operated during weekdays from 6:30-9:30am to 3:30-6:30pm.

Luke Donnellan, minister for roads and road safety, said the changes will help to make trips down Punt Road more reliable for motorists during busy periods.

“Over the next month bumper crowds will be heading to the MCG, and those travelling along Punt Road can expect a more reliable journey,” he said.

“By introducing 24/7 clearways along Punt Road, we’ll see immediate benefits in how the traffic flows particularly on the weekends and outside of traditional peak periods.”

To compensate for the lack of on-street parking, three new car parks will be opened by the end of December for those who live, work and visit the area.

These new car parks will be located at 182 Punt Road, 198 Punt Road and 274 Punt Road.

While this will likely come as a welcome revision for the 330,000 people that commute on Punt Road every day, last month the RACV called for the no-parking zones to be extended further north of the Yarra River all the way to the Eastern Freeway.

Brian Negus, RACV public policy general manager, said: “North of the river, traffic congestion is a nightmare and must also be immediately addressed.

“Melbourne drivers are fed up with sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic even on weekends and in the off-peak. RACV wants the 24/7 clearways to extend all the way from the Yarra River to the Eastern Freeway.

One of the most significant arterial roads in inner-city Melbourne, Punt Road acts as a bypass of the city while also providing access to many locations in inner Melbourne, including the MCG and Melbourne Park.
