Bugatti Chiron performance hybrid currently under evaluation

The Bugatti Chiron may adopt a hybrid drivetrain in order to improve its performance even further.

Prior to the unveiling of the Chiron, there were plenty of rumours flying around that the new hypercar would feature a W16 engine aided by a hybrid system.

Instead, the Veyron's replacement featured an updated version of the company's 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16. Equipped with 1103kW of power and 1600Nm of torque, the Chiron good for an electronically-restricted top speed of 420km/h, and a 0-100km/h time of under 2.5 seconds.

Wolfgang Durheimer, Bugatti's CEO, has told Autocar that a hybrid version of the Chiron "is something we have under consideration now".

For those worried that the Chiron might turn into a Prius, any hybrid drivetrain that would go into the Chiron would be all about performance, and "would not be to drive around in the city using electric motors".

Durheimer noted that the brand's W16 engine made its debut 13 years ago, and over time the output has been upped from 735kW to 882kW, and now 1103kW.

To achieve those jumps, 95 per cent of the engine's components have been changed, but to go beyond that electric assistance may be required. The CEO admits, though, that fitting electric motors, batteries and other ancillaries might pose some packaging problems.
