Honda patents 11-speed triple-clutch transmission – report

Honda has reportedly filed a patent in Japan for an 11-speed triple-clutch transmission.

According to AutoGuide, which initially found the patent, the filing was made by Honda on May 27, 2016. In a translation of the patent application Honda claims that the third clutch will reduce torque loss.

The automaker also states that the 11-speed transmission will allow "speed change to be more effectively restricted and a speed change response to be increased".

There's no indication of how close to production this 11-speed transmission is, nor what type of vehicle it might make its debut in.

When we tried to access the patent filing, it timed out with a "server is currently busy" message.

Last year Honda unveiled a 10-speed automatic transmission for front-engine, front-wheel drive cars that will reportedly go on sale by 2020.

GM and Ford have also teamed up to develop a 10-speed automatic, but this unit was engineered for pickup trucks and rear-wheel drive cars. Later this year, the 10-speed auto will be used in the Ford F-150 Raptor where it will be hooked up to a 3.5-litre turbo V6.

The Ford and GM 10-speed transmission will also be available later this year in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which is powered by a 447kW/868Nm 6.2-litre V8. A recent report indicated that American Mustangs will also be available with this transmission from next year.

The new Lexus LC500 also features V8 petrol engine driving the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission.
