Cadillac Escala concept debuts brand’s new styling direction

If the Escala is a true guide to what's coming up from the American luxury brand, future Cadillacs will have a smoother and more classically beautiful sense of style.

The Cadillac Escala concept has made its debut ahead of the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and is said to preview the brand's new design direction.

Some elements of today's Art and Science design language, such as the thin vertical tail-lights, and sharp creases and detailing have been carried over, though.

Measuring 5347mm long, 1948mm wide, 1455mm tall, and sitting on a 3228mm wheelbase, the Escala is built on a stretched version of the CT6's rear- and all-wheel drive platform.

The Escala is described as a "more expressive, expansive companion" to today's range-topping CT6 sedan, and is around 150mm longer than the donor vehicle. Unusually for the brand, the Escala has a liftback tailgate, making it a five-door vehicle.

Under the bonnet, the Escala features a 4.2-litre twin-turbo V8, which will make its production debut soon in the CT6.

The interior of the Escala was previewed earlier this week, and is said to be divided into a two sections, with the front focussed on technology and the rear on relaxation.

For those sitting up front, there are three curved OLED screens mounted atop the dashboard. One screen directly in front of the driver acts primarily as an instrumentation display, while the other screens are linked to the infotainment and navigation systems.

In addition to the usual array of hand cut and sewn leather surfaces, the Escala also features, for the door and seats, hand-tailored fabrics similar to what's used in the fashion industry. Polished wood is notable by its absence.
