Aston Martin Vantage GT12 Roadster spied at the Nurburgring

An open-top version of the Aston Martin Vantage GT12 has been spied testing at the Nurburgring this week.

The same beefy bodykit from the GT12 coupe (read our review here) features on this rag-top prototype, albeit without the metal roof and huge rear wing.

The company recently revealed a “one-off” Vantage GT12 Roadster at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, specially built for a cashed-up customer by the company's bespoke Q by Aston Martin division.

However, the prototype spotted going around the German race track raises the question – is there a production version on the way?

Considering the next-generation Aston Martin Vantage is expected to make its debut sometime in the second half of 2017, the GT12 Roadster could be one of several last-hurrah models for Britain’s Porsche 911 rival.

Under the bonnet of the GT12 Roadster shown at Goodwood is the same 441kW/625Nm 6.0-litre V12 from the coupe mated to a seven-speed Speedshift automatic transmission. By comparison, the 'standard' V12 Vantage S Roadster generates 421kW of power and 620Nm of torque.

While performance figures were not quoted for the one-off special, the coupe can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 298km/h – which is lower than the V12 Vantage S's 330km/h top whack mainly due to the GT12's lower final drive ratio.

A roadster version would be slightly slower to triple figures (around 3.7 seconds) and have a lower top speed due to the heavier electric roof mechanism and wobblier body from the lack of hard top.

No official details of a GT12 Roadster have been released yet, however if a limited-run convertible does make it into production, expect it to be revealed sometime over the next 12 months.

If the GT12 and GT8 coupes are anything to go by, we could possibly see a V8 version of the hardcore convertible before the current car is replaced late next year as well.
