Volkswagen Passat 206TSI coming soon

A new Volkswagen Passat 206TSI R-Line 4Motion performance leader will hit Australian showrooms in October this year, giving the company’s local arm a spiritual successor to the cult Passat R36.

The hotted-up Volkswagen Passat sedan and wagon derivative will top the range, with its 206kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, DSG gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel drive system shared with the Golf R and Skoda Superb.

This makes it something of a follow-up to the much-loved 220kW/350Nm 3.6-litre six-cylinder Passat R36 sold until 2010, which wrapped up with a price as high as $66,990.

The Passat 206TSI R-Line will get features such as adaptive chassis control and an Active Information Display, reminiscent of Audi's Virtual Cockpit driver's instruments.

Pricing for the Passat 206TSI R-Line will kick off at $57,990 plus on-road costs, climbing to $59,990 for the wagon. The current diesel-powered 140TDI Highline Passat flagship costs $45,990-$47,990, by comparison.

Around the same time, the company will also introduce some running changes to other Passat variants as part of MY17, bringing a range of additional equipment to the table.

The base 132TSI will get new 17-inch alloy wheels and Front Assist with AEB, while the Comfortline, Highline and Alltrack will get memory seats and the R-Line gets new 18-inch alloys and said Active Info Display.
