2017 BMW X2 bound for Paris, 8 Series coming to replace 6 – report

The small sports-themed SUV expected to be known as the 2017 BMW X2 will reportedly debut October's Paris motor show, and the anticipated return of the 8 Series name is in the spotlight once again.

The so-called X2 was spied testing earlier this year, with only a light layer of camouflage to disguise what is clearly intended as a sporty, tapered roofline.

The new model is expected to enter as a companion to the new-generation X1 that launched here last year, taking its inspiration from the larger coupe-like X4 and X6 models.

Unlike those two, however, this smaller offering will dial back the explicit coupe theme in favour of an Evoque-like roofline that should still provide a reasonable amount of rear headroom and storage.

It had previously been thought that the 'X2' would make its first appearance in 2017, but a new report with UK magazine Autocar suggests it could come as soon as the Paris motor show, this October.

Elsewhere in BMW news, talk of a return for the 8 Series is back, with BMW Blog and Automobile Magazine both reporting that the badge will come in as a new rival to the S-Class coupe and convertible models.

Such a plan would make the 8 Series a companion to the 7 Series sedan in the same way the 4 Series sits alongside the 3 Series, along with the X3/X4 and X5/X6 pairings.

Automobile reports that the 8 Series will carry the internal codes G14 and G15. The current 7 Series is known as the G11 (regular wheelbase) and G12 (long wheelbase), and the next-generation 3 and 5 Series models will also graduate to the G nomenclature.

The 8 Series would essentially replace the current 6 Series models, while that badge will reportedly be repurposed for a rival to the Porsche 911 and new Mercedes-AMG GT.

BMW, for its part, is yet to confirm these reports, although it is known to have trademarked the names 825, 830, 835, 845 and 850, along with the M850 and M8 names.

The 8 Series is reported to be scheduled for a 2020 launch, so prototypes will likely begin to appear on the road in the next couple of years. Don't be surprised if the Pininfarina Gran Lusso concept, although now three years old, holds a few hints as to the car's look.
