Subaru planning plug-in hybrid for 2018, all-electric SUV for 2021 – report

Subaru is looking to launch an all-wheel drive SUV-styled electric vehicle (EV) by 2021 in response to more stringent emissions legislation in overseas markets, according to a new report.

Industry journal Automotive News quotes an article written by Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, saying the new model will be based on the Forester or Outback - pointing to a mid-sized all-wheel drive vehicle.

Underpinning the electric SUV will be Subaru’s new global platform, which was revealed earlier this year, that will underpin all of the company’s future models starting with the recently-revealed 2017 Impreza.

However, Masato Saito - spokesperson for Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, said there has been no decision made regarding the introduction of an all-electric all-wheel drive model, yet.

“We have yet to decide on any specifics at the moment,” he said.

Saito added, though, if Subaru does introduce such a vehicle, it would likely use the new platform and target the North American markets.

The US is currently the company’s biggest market, and with a range mainly consisting of all-wheel drive and SUV models, Subaru is said to be looking at ways of boosting fuel efficiency and reducing emissions in the wake of increasingly strict regulations in the States.

According to Automotive News, Subaru has already confirmed plans to introduce its first plug-in hybrid to its line-up around 2018 in response to US emissions laws that will take effect the same year.
