BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, X5 added to Takata airbag recall:: 28,600 vehicles affected
In this latest Takata recall, BMW reports the driver airbag’s gas generator can malfunction due to high levels of humidity.
As a result of the defect, the inflator could rupture, shooting metal fragments into the cabin, which poses a significant risk of injury, or even death, to the vehicle’s occupants.
The Takata recall has affected around 60 million vehicles worldwide, across a wide range of manufacturers from Toyota and Honda to Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari.
Affected 3 Series, 5 Series and X5 vehicles were sold from 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2005. The VIN numbers for the affected BMWs can be viewed here.
BMW last issued a recall for faulty airbag inflators back in 2013, which also affected the E46-generation 3 Series.
Owners of the affected vehicles are urged to contact their local BMW dealer, or call BMW Australia’s customer car on 1800 813 299.
