Mitsubishi XM concept revealed: Grandis and Delica merge to form new crossover people-mover

The Mitsubishi XM concept has been revealed for the Gaikindo Indonesian international auto show, previewing an upcoming model that will blur the lines between MPV and SUV.

Previewed in a single teaser image a fortnight ago, the XM wears a similar design to the eX concept from last year’s Tokyo motor show, but with a higher tailgate and longer roofline.

As reported earlier, the XM looks very similar to the smaller eX that preceded it. From the front, the two cars look almost identical - even the bright yellow paint job has been carried over.

Mitsubishi says the XM is designed to mix “the toughness of an SUV with the versatility of an MPV”. The letter ‘X’ comes crossover while ‘M’ is derived from MPV.

While the eX likely previews the next ASX SUV, the XM is believed to hint at an upcoming small MPV that will be released in the second half of next year, and produced in Indonesia.

No interior images have been released, but the XM is said to feature seven seats, despite its relatively small dimensions.

The XM’s powertrain also remains a mystery, for now, though it could use electric power like the eX.

While not confirmed, the upcoming Mitsubishi MPV could be the successor to the Grandis people mover - with a little of the classic Delica mixed in.

Mitsubishi is also set to reveal the Grand Tourer concept at the Paris motor show later this year, which is believed to preview the next-generation Outlander SUV.
