Ferrari’s new flexible platform will bring major weight savings

Ferrari has confirmed that it is working on a new lightweight platform to underpin its next generation of vehicles.

Dubbed the 'Next Generation' platform, it will be used in "several new flagship vehicle derivatives".

The new architecture is said to be 15 per cent lighter than today's equivalents, but will also improve "performance of crash, NVH [noise, vibration and harshness] and other critical attributes by over 20 per cent".

It's believed this new architecture is built around an aluminium spaceframe, and can be used for both front- and mid-engined Ferrari cars. The new platform can also accommodate both rear- and all-wheel drive setups, along with hybrid drivetrains.

The new modular platform is being developed in conjunction with Altair, an engineering consultancy firm based in Detroit, Michigan, which provided computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) expertise and software.

According to Royston Jones, vice president in charge of Altair's European operations: "The Next Generation architecture ... has an organic nature, with the structure flowing smoothly from sections to joints. It's an outcome of a massive deployment of structural optimisation defining optimum material layout resulting in outstanding weight / performance characteristics.

A report last year indicated that the new architecture will be first used underneath the replacement for the California, which is expected to debut in 2017.
