BMW M4 GT4 will go racing in 2018

The BMW M4 GT4 race car is scheduled to hit the track for the 2018 racing season.

A direct replacement for the M3 GT4 that's still in use by privateer teams today, the M4 GT4 is currently being developed by BMW Motorsport, with the first tests scheduled to take place near the end of 2016.

Mechanically and structurally, the M4 GT4 will be very closely related to the road-legal M4 models on sale today. BMW Motorsport says that the GT4's entire drivetrain will be shared with the M4, while the GT4's carbon-fibre bonnet is the same as the one used by the M4 GTS.

The road-going M4 has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six pumping out 317kW of power and 550Nm of torque to the rear wheels.

Bespoke items include carbon-fibre doors, a new front splitter and rear wing, and a racing exhaust system. The M4 GT4 will also borrow the seats, brakes, and pedal box from the M6 GT3.

According to Jens Marquardt, director of BMW Motorsport, the M4 GT4 will "close the gap between our customer racing spearhead, the BMW M6 GT3, and the BMW M235i Racing [aimed at] newcomers".

The order books are already open for the M4 GT4, and customer deliveries are said to commence in the second half of 2017. The first race that the M4 GT4 is eligible for is the 24 Hours of Dubai in January 2018.
