2017 Volkswagen Crafter unveiled, arrives in Australia late next year

The next-generation Volkswagen Crafter has been unveiled ahead of its debut in Australia late next year.

Available in three different lengths and with the choice of three roof heights, the new van uses a new platform and, unlike the current van, is unrelated to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

Under the bonnet, the next-generation Crafter uses a new 2.0-litre EA288 Nutz turbo-diesel engine that was especially developed for the van. Volkswagen says the new TDI motor is "extremely reliable", and has been designed to "ensure downtime is never a problem".

The single turbo version will be available in three different states of tune — 75kW, 90kW, and 103kW — while the twin-turbo version pumps out 130kW of power and headlines the range.

Buyers can choose between front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive versions of the new Crafter, as well as manual and automatic transmissions.

Inside the cabin, the Crafter can specified with dual-zone climate control air conditioning, a heated steering wheel, and the company's latest touchscreen infotainment and navigation system.

Available safety features include stability control with trailer stabilisation, adaptive cruise control, sidewind compensation system, trailer manoeuvring assistance, reversing camera, parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alerts, LED headlights, cornering light, and lighting assistance.

Australia
The new Crafter range will go on sale in Australia in stages from the second half of 2017. The next-generation Crafter will be built at a newly built factory in Wrzesnia, Poland.
