2016 Suzuki Baleno pricing and specifications

The all-new 2016 Suzuki Baleno is now on sale in Australia, starting at a sharp $16,990 drive-away for the base GL manual variant.

After the model's initial details were teased last week, Suzuki has finally released full pricing and specifications data for its new model, which slots somewhere between the light and small hatch segments. The Baleno is pitched as offering small car space in a light car body.

Measuring 3995mm long and 1745mm wide, the Baleno is 145mm longer and 50mm wider than the Suzuki Swift, while being 335mm shorter and just 15mm narrower than the Toyota Corolla hatch.

A major selling point of the Baleno is its impressive 355-litre boot, which is a significant 145 litres larger than the Swift’s luggage area and only five litres smaller than in the Corolla. With the rear seats folded, the Baleno’s load area expands to a maximum volume of 1085L with all seats folded.

That figure also puts the Baleno ahead of the Mazda 3 hatch (308L) and just behind Australia’s most popular car so-far this year, the Hyundai i30 (378L). Keep in mind, these models are in the next segment up.

Two engines are offered, depending on model grade. A 68kW/130Nm 1.4-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine in the GL and the new 82kW/160Nm 1.0-litre ‘Boosterjet’ turbocharged three-cylinder in the GLX Turbo.

Standard on the base GL is a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation and Apple CarPlay, reversing camera, bluetooth phone and audio streaming, 15-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, cruise control, LED daytime-running lamps (DRLs) and fog lights.

Stepping up to the GLX Turbo variant swaps the bumper-mounted LED daytime lights for units integrated into the headlights, keyless entry and start, 16-inch alloy wheels, HID headlights, climate control, steering-mounted paddle-shifters, and a 4.2-inch LCD display in the driver’s instrument cluster.

Safety equipment fitted across the range includes six airbags, ABS, electronic stability control (ESC), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA).

Claimed fuel consumption is 5.1L/100km for the GL manual (5.4L/100km auto) and 5.2L/100km for the GLX Turbo automatic, making the Baleno, in all versions, more efficient than every Swift variant.

The Baleno’s impressive fuel economy has been achieved through a lighter new-generation platform, and weight-saving technologies used in the doors, seats, suspension and brakes.

Four colours (one solid and three metallic) are offered; Arctic White, Silver Metallic, Ray Blue Metallic and Granite Grey Metallic.

Starting at $16,990 drive-away for the base GL manual and topping out at $22,990 drive-away for the top-spec GLX Turbo, the 2016 Suzuki Baleno range on sale now.

Stay tuned for our review of the Baleno in the coming weeks.
