2015 Tesla ‘Allterrain’ speculative rendering could hint at confirmed ute

Earlier this month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk released part two of his ‘masterplan’ for the all-electric company, which included mention of ‘a new kind of pick-up truck’.

The ‘Tesla Allterrain’ concept above - a speculative rendering crafted by a former Tesla design intern - could give clues as to what this new ute may look like.

No time frame has been set for the new electric ute, other than Musk’s statement that - along with a new compact SUV to sit below the Model X - it is unlikely to be priced below the Model 3 sedan, which is expected to start around the US$35,000 ($46,750) mark.

Since Tesla doesn’t tend to release concepts to preview a production model, there isn’t really a way to envision what their future products will look like without using aspects of current models.

Of course, this hasn’t stopped fans from mocking up their own designs of the new ute, such as this one below:

However, a more solid lead could be taken from a concept designed by Jason McGinnity, one of Tesla’s own who then went on to become a product designer at Adidas Future Design.

Dubbed the ‘Tesla Allterrain’, McGinnity’s concept was his sponsored thesis project during his interior/exterior design internship with the electric manufacturer.

The Allterrain is pretty much the sparky lovechild of a Jeep Wrangler and Toyota FJ Cruiser in terms of design, packing a 70kWh battery pack that can whizz the electric off-roader from 0-100km/h in just four seconds.

Instead of a spare wheel mounted to the tailgate, McGinnity has designed a removable 10kWh battery back that resembles a jerry can crossed with Tesla’s Powerwall.

According to the specs McGinnity envisions, the Tesla Allterrain would be capable of a 220-mile (354km) all-electric range, with a top speed of 193km/h.

By comparison, the Tesla Model S 70 fitted with the 70kWh battery pack manages a 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds, with a range of up to 400 kilometres - so McGinnity’s projected figures aren’t impossible.

Other features of the Allterrain concept include a spare wheel in the front trunk (‘frunk’), along with a sliding C-pillar with stretched semi-transparent waterproof fabric - likely inspired by the Jeep Wrangler’s folding roof.

Although the Tesla Allterrain is more SUV than 4x4 ute, aspects of its design could potentially be adopted on a larger platform to underpin a full-sized electric workhorse.

It’s also possible elements of the concept could make their way to the upcoming compact SUV also detailed in Musk’s second master plan. We’ll just have to wait and see.
