Gosford Classic Car Museum Review: An afternoon in the company of legends

Situated a little over an hour from Sydney just off the M1 is every car lover’s dream, a place of sanctity and beauty beyond compare.

Home to over 400 classic and new cars (even a few motorbikes), the Gosford Classic Car Museum has certainly put itself up there as one of the world’s biggest private car collections, with an endless collection of marques such as Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Chevrolet, BMW and even lesser known marques like Jensen, Tarta and Lada.

It is quite a shock when you walk in, as you’re greeted by multiple cars you’ve probably only ever seen in photographs. To see them in the flesh is a whole new experience that will leave you with goosebumps and a huge grin on your face.

I found it especially hard to keep away from the Jaguar XJ220, my childhood dream car. With this being the first time I've laid eyes on one in person, it certainly did not disappoint.

The inside of the museum has been completely refurbished, as it was previously a Bunnings Warehouse. The floors are now polished, which certainly makes everything even more appealing to look at.

The carpeted walkways give plenty of room for everyone - even at the busier times, such as midday, you won't feel hassled by crowds or have your heels stepped on.

Trying to get good photographs, on the other hand, can be a bit tricky as the red ropes that cordon off the cars get in the way of some shots.

Alongside every car, you'll find an information panel that give specifications such as the engine capacity, weight, torque and of course the names of each car.

This is quite useful when stumbling across a car that you didn’t even know existed, such as the Alvis TE21, a British saloon car produced from 1963 to 1966.

While the information panels were handy when it came to technical information, it would’ve been nice to have a section with a bit of trivia or history about the cars. I did notice the Aston Martin DB5 information panel tells you which James Bond movie it was in, and this is something that would be great to read on most of the cars.

To add to the experience, the staff and volunteers at the museum were only too willing to answer any questions I had and also had a very in-depth knowledge of all the cars present.

One staff member even opened up the twin jet powered Aussie Invader III and gave me a look inside, definitely something you don't see very often.

With a $20 entry fee, the museum is well worth the visit, particularly considering the time and effort taken to keep this collection in the pristine condition that it's in. It must cost a pretty penny.

Once you've finished marvelling, the gift shop on the way out is also worth a look, with plenty of goodies to take home and put on your shelf or hang up.

So, if you live in Sydney or are planning a visit, take an hour to travel to the Gosford Classic Car Museum to see a vast array of motoring history. You certainly won't be disappointed, it is an absolute Mecca for car lovers.
