Tesla Roadster 3.0 upgrade priced at $47,000

The Telsa Roadster 3.0 upgrade has begun its slow roll out, with local owners set to pay just a little over $47,000 if they want the revised battery pack.

Announced at the tail-end of 2014, the Tesla Roadster 3.0 upgrade includes a number of tweaks, including a refined aerodynamics package, new tyres, and, most importantly, a new battery pack.

Designed to store around 40 percent more energy than the original 53kWh battery pack, upgraded vehicles will feature new 'R80' badges on the rump.

According to American testing standards, 3.0 upgrade will give existing Roadsters a range of around 550 kilometres on a full charge.

Australian Tesla Roadster buyers who opt for the upgrade will have to shell out a bit over $47,000 for the privilege. In the US, the upgrade is priced at US$29,000 ($38,600) before taxes.

Part of the high price is attributed to the hand-built nature of the new batteries.

Retrofitting work for Australian Roadsters will be done locally, but buyers who elect for the upgrade may have to wait a while before they get to enjoy its benefits, as Tesla is only making two to three of the new battery packs per week.

Electrek reports that a small number of Roadster owners have recently received their upgrades.
