Nissan ProPilot self-driving system launched in Japan

Overnight Nissan launched the ProPilot self-driving system in the new domestic market Serena people mover.

This first version of the ProPilot system is only capable of piloting the car in a single lane on a highway. The driver activates the system via a button on the steering and sets a preferred speed between 30 and 100km/h.

From there, the ProPilot system takes control of the car's steering, accelerator and brakes. Using a forward facing mono camera, ProPilot is able to read lane markings, and gauge the distance to the cars in front of it.

The system will keep the car in the middle of its lane and follow the car in front at a safe distance. ProPilot is capable of steering the vehicle through corners, and bringing the car to a complete stop.

Once the vehicle has come to a standstill, the human driver has to restart ProPilot, either by pressing the steering wheel button or lightly tapping on the accelerator.

As we reported last month, sequent iterations of the ProPilot system will be capable of operating in more scenarios. Version two, due in 2018, will able to drive across multiple highway lanes.

A third version, due for release in 2020, will be capable of handling intersections and urban traffic.

The first model to feature the ProPilot system will be the just unveiled fifth-generation Serena people mover, which goes on sale across Japan this August.

The company says that it is carrying out "intensive studies of driving conditions in various regions so that ProPilot will be well suited to the conditions in the markets in which it will be launched".

Nissan has confirmed that it will make ProPilot available in Europe from 2017 with the Qashqai. The car maker also has plans to make the technology available in China and the US.

We're currently waiting to hear back from Nissan Australia about whether ProPilot will be introduced for our market.
