Skoda Kodiaq teased, initial details revealed

Skoda has released initial details and a video of its upcoming Kodiaq large SUV, featuring a new surround camera system, claimed best-in-class luggage capacity, and the availability of seven seats.

Scheduled for an October debut at this year’s Paris motor show ahead of a 2017 launch, the brand’s first seven-seater SUV will become Skoda’s flagship model and enter the highly-competitive large SUV segment. There, it will take on the likes of the Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and the recently-launched Mazda CX-9.

According to the Czech car maker, the Kodiaq will have a class-leading luggage capacity of up to 2065 litres, be offered in front- and all-wheel drive, and powered by a choice of five engines - two TDI turbo diesels and three TSI turbo-petrol engines.

The only engine confirmed is the “most powerful” 132kW 2.0-litre TSI turbo petrol, which is featured in numerous models across the Volkswagen Group - casting doubt over the inclusion of the Superb’s 206kW turbo petrol range-topper.

Some variants in the European range will also be offered with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a DSG dual-clutch transmission, however Australian models are likely to get the DSG as standard like the closely related Superb mid-sizer.

The Kodiaq will also be the first Skoda to feature the Area View surround camera system, and will offer selectable driving modes along with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) - along with an off-road mode for all-wheel drive variants.

Skoda claims that the Kodiaq will also offer class-leading infotainment features, using the Volkswagen Group’s communications systems that will offer capacitive touchscreens, WiFi hotspot, internet connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Although European markets get a range of infotainment system options, it is likely that the Australian range will get a version of the 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system from the Superb as standard across the range.

Michael Irmer, boss of Skoda Australia, confirmed last month that the Kodiaq should arrive in Australia mid-2017 - pointing to a local launch around August next year.
