2017 BMW 5 Series sedan and Touring wagon rendered

Speculative renderings of the next-generation BMW 5 Series sedan and Touring have surfaced online, offering a glimpse at what the luxury mid-sizer may look like when it makes its debut.

Once again, Dutch artist Remco Meulendijk has created a set of renderings for both the 5 Series sedan and the 5 Series Touring wagon - likely based on the several prototypes that have been spied testing over the past year.

Set to take on the likes of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Jaguar XF and the Lexus GS, The new-generation 5 Series models depicted here clearly draw inspiration from the 7 Series limousine, X5 SUV and the facelifted 3 Series sedan and wagon.

Earlier spy photos confirm that, in comparison to the current car, the next 5 Series will adopt a lower and wider stance - similar to that of the 3 Series and 7 Series - along with significantly redesigned front and rear ends.

Meulendijk’s rendering for the sedan looks much like a ‘mini-me’ 7 Series, although the 5 is hardly a small vehicle. BMW could likely follow Mercedes-Benz in giving their sedan range a ‘babushka doll’ look.

The 5 Series Touring wagon rendering retains much of the sedan’s design, with the obvious exception of the longer roof and hatchback tailgate.

It’s worth noting that both the sedan and wagon variants pictured appear to be M Sport models, wearing larger alloy wheels and more aggressive front and rear bumpers.

Under the skin, the next-generation 5 Series will use a version of BMW’s Carbon Core modular architecture, which utilises a combination of lightweight materials including high-strength steel, aluminium and carbon-fibre - which should see the new 5 Series shed around 100 kilograms from the current car.

Reports speculate that the next-generation BMW 5 Series will be offered with a range of engines, including a new three-cylinder option alongside the current four-, six- and eight-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel line-up.

Expect the new 5 Series to be revealed later this year, possibly at the Paris motor show in October. A new 5 Series GT hatchback will eventually join the range later on.

Should the new model debut in October, it’s likely first Australian deliveries of the next-gen 5 Series will commence early 2017.
