2017 Volkswagen Crafter previewed ahead of September debut

A first set of teaser sketches for the all-new 2017 Volkswagen Crafter has been handed down this week, ahead of an unveiling set for September.

As the largest of Volkswagen's commercial vans, the Crafter sits above the Transporter range in the company's global line-up.

For this new generation, Volkswagen has moved the Crafter to an all-new but as-yet unspecified platform, shifting away from the Mercedes Sprinter platform that underpins the current model.

"With the Crafter, a level of surface quality, robustness and the same time high qualitative value are achieved that have never before been available in this commercial vehicle class", said Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design boss, Albert-Johann Kirzinger.

Volkswagen says it has worked with current Crafter owners to best establish the market's needs, even joining drivers on their daily travels to experience first-hand how the vehicle is being used.

Further details are still to come, although we can likely expect a range of four-cylinder diesel engines to star.

Watch for the new Crafter to make its global debut at September's Hanover commercial vehicle show in Germany.
