2016 Mazda CX-9 scores five-star ANCAP safety rating

The new 2016 Mazda CX-9 range has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), ahead of its local launch later this week.

Scoring 35.87 out of a possible 37, the five-star rating applies to the entire new second-generation CX-9 range, which features active safety systems such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and low-speed autonomous emergency braking (AEB, forward and reverse) as standard across the line-up.

The CX-9 scored perfect marks in the pole and side impact tests, while also earning a ‘good’ pedestrian protection rating - scoring 29.30 out of 36 points in the pedestrian test.

Following the announcement of the CX-9’s maximum safety rating, every model in Mazda’s line-up now has a five-star ANCAP certification.

Martin Benders, managing director for Mazda Australia, said that the company was “delighted” to have its entire model range wear the maximum five-star rating.

“We are delighted with the safety result for [the] brand new CX-9,” he said. “It offers peace of mind to families in the market for a premium seven-seat SUV.”

“This is an important day for Mazda, our range of vehicles, and buyers considering a Mazda purchase,” Benders added.

This is the first time a model with the CX-9 badge has been tested by the local independent crash testing authority, as the previous generation was unrated by ANCAP.

“This is the first time we’ve subjected the CX-9 to the ANCAP crash test process,” said James Goodwin, chief executive officer of ANCAP.

“Safety is an important consideration for buyers in this class as this model is likely to be used to transport children and other family members.”

“CX-9 buyers have previously gone without a rating so we have filled this gap with safety savvy consumers now able to enter the showroom with confidence knowing all new variants offer the top level of safety,” he added.

Despite the impressive active safety features fitted as standard across the CX-9 range, advanced features such as high-speed AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assistance, adaptive headlights and driver fatigue warning are reserved solely for the flagship Azami variant.

The new-generation CX-9 range goes on sale this Friday.
