Honda Australia adds 200,000 cars to Takata airbag recall

Honda Australia has recalled an additional 202,089 vehicles as part of an ongoing global recall for dozens of car makers affected by the Takata airbag scandal that first broke in 2013.

For Honda, this latest recall follows notices issued in February this year and in July last year, while earlier recall notices went out in 2014 and 2013 both. This week's announcement takes Honda's local Takata recall beyond 600,000 vehicles.

Globally, Honda has been one of the hardest-hit by the news that supplier Takata had knowingly supplied faulty airbag inflators to its global automotive clients.

The Takata recall, the largest automotive recall in history, centres on the potential for metal fragments to pass through the airbag at the moment of deployment. It has affected more than 53 million vehicles worldwide.
