2017 Volkswagen Tiguan XL spied in China

The lengthened, seven-seat Volkswagen Tiguan XL has been photographed in production trim in China.

These low resolution photos, which we found on Auto Sina, feature undisguised versions of the Tiguan XL and were reportedly taken at one of Shanghai Volkswagen's factories.

As we can see in these images, the XL features a longer rear overhang to accommodate a third row of seats. According to the website, the Tiguan XL will also incorporate a slightly lengthened wheelbase.

Overall length is expected to grow by around 110mm over the standard-wheelbase second-generation Tiguan. Space in the third row is said to be tight, with the seats best used for younger kids or in emergency situations.

Visually the Tiguan XL features the same front end, tailgate and tail-lights as the five-seat Tiguan. The biggest design change is the pane of glass behind the rear door, which is not only larger, but also features a prominent upward kick.

The Volkswagen Tiguan XL will be produced in China for domestic consumption, with the rest of the world's supply sourced out of one of the company's factories in Mexico.

Australia

Michael Bartsch, Volkswagen Australia's managing director, confirmed to CarAdvice in April that it was "planning to have the seven-seat” version.

The Mexico-built Tiguan XL is expected to launch in early 2017, meaning that a local debut won't happen until the middle of 2017, at the earliest.
