Mitsubishi Ground Tourer concept teased

The Mitsubishi Ground Tourer concept has been teased ahead of its debut later this year at the Paris motor show, which starts at the beginning of October.

Mitsubishi is keeping its powder dry regarding the Ground Tourer's details, but it has revealed that it will employ the company's latest plug-in hybrid drivetrain technology.

The Ground Tourer is said to preview "an upmarket SUV", and it's believed that the concept will preview some of the design cues that will be worn by the third-generation Outlander SUV.

According to Mitsubishi, the concept will feature "the latest Japanese design trends" and a "luxuriously crafted interior". The Ground Tourer is reportedly fashioned around four key concepts: "augmented possibilities, functional beauty, solid thrust and Japanese craftsmanship".

If the concept's looks carry through to production, the next-generation Outlander should feature a body with crisper detailing and bolder details, along with a more raked-back tailgate and a thick C-pillar.

No doubt, the company will hope that the unveiling of the concept will draw a line under its recent troubles.

In April this year, Mitsubishi admitted that it had overstated the fuel economy of its eK and eK Space kei cars, in addition to rebadged Nissan Dayz and Dayz Roox models that it produces on behalf of Nissan.

It was later revealed that the company had been using illegal fuel economy measurement techniques on its domestic vehicles since 1991.

Less than a month later, Nissan announced plans to purchase a controlling 34 per cent stake in Mitsubishi Motors. This will likely see future Mitsubishi vehicles based on platforms shared with the Renault-Nissan alliance.

This could lead to the Mirage replacement being based on the Nissan Micra, while the much-delayed next-generation Lancer could share much of its underpinnings with the Pulsar.

It's likely that the third-generation Outlander is too close to completion for there to be any Nissan influence on its design or mechanical package.
