Deals On Wheels – tradie special

It’s time for the latest instalment of Deals on Wheels, our look at factory-backed special offers for all you (end of financial year) new car shoppers.

This isn’t a promotional campaign, just us trying to offer you some interesting suggestions if you’re in the market for some new wheels.

This is a special version, focusing on super-sharp discounts that can easily be found on a number of commercial vehicles as we hit the end of the financial year. Don't forget to jot down your ABN...

Ford Ranger XLS 4x4 double cab

The Ford Ranger XLT and Wildtrak are the glamours of the range, but the $11,500 cheaper XLS is where the value’s at, with a current drive-away price of $45,490 after factory bonus. You’re saving thousands at this rate.

You still get the proper 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine rather than the lesser 2.2, 3500kg towing capacity, locking rear diff, 800mm wading capability and six-speed manual gearbox.

You also get six airbags, a 230V inverter, load tray lighting, Bluetooth/iPod integration, a 4.2-inch colour screen, 16-inch alloys, auto headlights and cruise control.

Holden SV6 Ute

The Australian-made Holden Ute and Ford Falcon ute really are two of a kind, and soon they will be gone, never to return. Has there ever been a better time to buy one?

If you don’t want or need a V8 (I know, it’d be tough), Holden is doing screaming deals on the 210kW SV6. It’s only $33,990 drive-away this weekend, meaning the Lion Brand is covering all on-road costs. But this one also gets a free six-speed auto, three-years free servicing and extended five-year warranty/roadside assist.

This is in addition to existing standard features including Holden’s MyLink Infotainment system with 8.0-inch colour touchscreen, blind-spot alert, reversing camera, all-round sensors, keyless start, automatic parking assist, reverse traffic alert and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Isuzu D-Max SX 4x2*

You’re going to save thousands off RRP on any Isuzu D-Max at the moment, so it’s basically a matter of taking your pick.

The D-Max 4x2 diesel trayback appeals at $25,990 drive-away, because it’s a few grand cheaper than the entry Ranger XL and the HiLux Workmate, and while you could argue that you’d pay extra for the high-end Ford/Toyota dual cabs, at the bottom end of the market, you’d be less inclined.

Under the bonnet is the company’s strong suit, its 3.0-litre turbo-diesel truck engine, matched to a manual gearbox (auto optional). You get a long 2550mm alloy tray, Bluetooth cruise control and electric windows. No-frills, but an excellent buy.

Mercedes-Benz Vito 111 CDI

The Mercedes-Benz Vito 111 CDI commercial van can be had for $36,990 drive-away at the moment, and according to Mercedes, the offer will go all the way through until the end of 2016. Remember that this car originally launched with a RRP of $37,320.

The German (Spanish-made) premium van has a 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine with 84kW/270Nm, so it’s no firebrand, but it’ll do the job. This price is for the six-speed manual version with front-wheel drive.

Plus you get that typical Mercedes innovation, meaning adaptive ESP, an attention assist system and crosswind assist. Be sure to get one with side airbags, or pre-order one, because from July build they’ll be standard. Don’t pay extra for them. Read more on that story here.

Mitsubishi Triton GLX+

Want a no-frills 4x4 dual-cab that’ll just do the job? That’s where the Triton excels. It’s no looker, but it’ll serve you well nevertheless.

It’s also still a bit of a steal, at $36,990 drive-away with a free auto. This one comes with the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel with 3100kg towing capacity, plus seven airbags and a trailer stability assist system.

Incidentally, you can opt up to the GLS 4x4 version for another $3000.

Renault Kangoo SWB

Got an ABN? Renault has a deal for you. You can get a SWB Kangoo petrol with manual gearbox for $21,990 drive-away. That’s a lot of delivery van for the cash.

For this you get a five-year/200,000km warranty (includes two-year extended manufacturer warranty), three cubic metres of cargo space and a 650kg payload.

You also get dual sliding cargo doors, air conditioning, Bluetooth audio streaming and dual airbags. Annual services are also initially capped at $349 a pop.

Toyota HiLux SR 4x4

Once upon a time, Toyota hardly needed to discount its top-selling HiLux. And while this beast remains the top-selling vehicle in Australia, strong rivals such as the Ford Ranger means it simply doesn't sell itself quite as it used to.

Perhaps the strongest deal at the moment is on the work-ready SR, one spec above the Workmate. At $46,990 drive-away, it’s a fair saving over the regular $46,490 RRP (excluding on-roads). This deal applies to private buyers, unlike many commercial offers.

The SR spec gets the range-topping 130kW/420Nm 2.8 diesel engine and a six-speed manual gearbox, offering a 3.5 tonne towing capacity. Naturally, it’s also a 4×4 with proper low-range.

There’s also a rear diff lock, reversing camera, side steps, underbody protection and heavy duty suspension, a seven-inch touchscreen, USB and Bluetooth.
