The outspoken chief executive also said that the company is considering an electric city car primarily targeted at European buyers.
At present, the Italian-American company's only full electric vehicle is the Fiat 500e. A so-called compliance car, the 500e is only sold in California, and despite its US$31,800 ($43,000) price tag, loses its parent company around US$14,000 ($18,900) on every sale.

In an interview shown on Bloomberg TV, Marchionne seemed to walk back some of his earlier comments about the viability of electric cars, saying: "I always thought that the economic model in support of the Tesla is something that FCA could replicate. And I think we have the brand and the vehicles to do it with. From our standpoint, the potential to use of our potential cars as an experiment is interesting."
He did caution that he's still not fully sold on electric cars, stating: "I’m not as convinced as some others are about the fact that electrification is a solution for all of man’s ills. I don’t think it is.
"I think we need to experiment as we’re doing now with connected cars and mobility. I think we’re all going through experimentation. Electrification is one potential answer."
