Haval details plug-in hybrid future

SUV maker Haval has presented its new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system, which the Chinese company claims will sip less than three litres per 100 kilometers.

After only recently declaring that diesel engine technology has “reached its zenith”, the company has handed down fresh details of the plug-in hybrid powertrain that drives its new HB-02 SUV concept.

Combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, Haval claims the PHEV system is capable of producing a hefty 450Nm of torque while achieving a claimed fuel consumption figure of just 2.1L/100km.

Furthermore, the new powertrain deviates from the traditional hybrid set-up - which separates the combustion engine and electric motor - by integrating the motor with the engine, connected to a rear-mounted lithium-ion battery.

Haval’s plug-in powertrain offers three driving modes: Pure Electric, Power and Hybrid Drive.

In ‘Pure Electric’ mode, the company claims that the 95kW/278Nm electric motor is capable of achieving a zero-emissions range of 65km from its 13kWh battery.

Haval says that in ‘Power’ mode - where both the petrol and electric motors combine outputs for greater performance - the PHEV will accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in around nine seconds, on its way to a 210km/h top speed.

The standard ‘Hybrid Drive’ setting alternates between the 1.5-litre engine and the electric motor to deliver the best fuel consumption, while also charging the battery when it’s not in use. In addition, the system uses regenerative braking to charge the battery while driving.

Haval says that the battery can be recharged in about four hours using a standard household power point.

Tim Smith, Haval Australia’s chief marketing officer, said: “The high-efficiency rating means it consumes about 80 per cent less energy than a similar-size petrol engine”.

“With a fuel consumption of just 2.1L/100km and three different driving modes to choose from, the Haval plug-in hybrid promises to be the perfect powertrain for Australian owners.”

“It has the potential to deliver all the performance customers expect from a premium SUV, with fuel economy figures they could only dream of previously,” he added.

The Haval plug-in hybrid system is expected to be released sometime in 2017.
