2017 Ford Fiesta spied

The next-generation 2017 Ford Fiesta hatch has been photographed testing on public roads in Europe.

With the current Fiesta already eight years old, it shouldn't be too long until we see a new model take the fight to the Volkswagen Polo, Mazda 2 and Honda Jazz.

Up front, the latest Fiesta features a new, slimmer version of Ford's six-pointed grille, flanked by taller headlights on each side. A strong character line runs down the car's shoulders, while the window line sweeps dramatically upwards towards the trailing edge of the rear doors.

Out the back, today's vertically stacked tail-lights have given away to a horizontal layout that extends into the tailgate. This prototype seems to include LED brake lights.

With the hatch expected to expand in most directions, there should be improved space for occupants. Along with the extra millimetres, the interior of the new Fiesta is expected to be a much classier affair than today's model.

Mid- and top-spec models will likely feature Ford's latest Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment and navigation system.

Engine options will include three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, many of which should feature turbocharging. A more powerful ST variant is practically a certainty, while a hotter RS model is widely rumoured to be in the works.

The current Fiesta made its global debut back in 2008, and is due for replacement soon. Although launch timing isn't yet known, it's likely that the new small hatch will arrive down under some time during 2017.
