Subaru Australia sets May sales record

Subaru Australia's strong SUV range led it it to a record May sales tally of 4002 units, placing it ninth overall. Its range growth was 6 per cent for the month, taking annual growth to 10.3 per cent.

Leading the way was the Subaru Forester with 1336 units, up 28 per cent, edging it closer to the class-leading Mazda CX-5 (2117), Toyota RAV4 (1695), Hyundai Tucson (1643) and Nissan X-Trail (1537).

Reflecting Subaru's reliance on SUVs, the Outback was its second top-seller with 1055 sales (up 19 per cent), making it one of the most popular large SUVs on the market.

Rounding out its top three was the XV small crossover with a strong 784 units (up 12.5 per cent) and market share in the Small SUV space of almost 10 per cent.

Subaru's leading passenger car was the Impreza (462, down 8.9 per cent), ahead of the Liberty (279 down 14.9 per cent), BRZ (51, up 59.4 per cent) and WRX (a low 35, about 10 per cent of its usual monthly average due to depleted MY16 stock).

Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said of the company's performance last month: “The May result is 199 ahead of our previous record for the month, set in 2012.

“Subaru is performing well ahead of the market, which is only up 3.8 per cent for the year and 3.6 per cent for the month.”

The result comes less than a month before the launch of the all-new Subaru Levorg turbocharged wagon. Mr Senior added: “We’re already getting huge interest in Levorg, so June promises to be strong Subaru sales month too".
