Ferrari wins International Engine Of The Year, Ford triumphs again

Italian marque Ferrari has received multiple honours at this week’s International Engine of the Year awards, with praise heaped on its 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8.

The engine - found in the 488 GTB, 488 Spider and California T - took the top prize for 2016, edging out last year’s winner: BMW’s 1.5-litre plug-in-hybrid powertrain from the i8.

It also took top honours in the Performance Engine, New Engine and the 3.0-litre to 4.0-litre categories.

“It’s a giant leap forward for turbocharged engines in terms of efficiency, performance and flexibility,” said Graham Johnson, co-chair of the International Engine of the Year Awards.

“It truly is the best engine in production today and will forever be remembered as one of the all-time greats.”

The iconic car maker also took out the Over 4.0-litre category with its naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V12 that powers the F12 Berlinetta and F12 Tdf.

Additionally, Ford’s 1.0-litre (998cc) three-cylinder turbo EcoBoost engine topped the sub-1.0-litre class for the fifth consecutive year. Locally, the engine can be found in the Ford Fiesta and the EcoSport SUV.

Particular praise was given to the engine’s combination of driveability, performance, economy, refinement and technology.

“The 1.0-liter EcoBoost was a game-changer, and despite others following our lead, it remains the undisputed benchmark in its class five years on,” said Trevor Worthington, vice president of product development for Ford Asia Pacific.

“It represents how we continue to innovate to bring our customers the mileage they need and the power they want in Asia Pacific with more EcoBoost engines across our growing product line-up.”

Volkswagen’s 999cc three-cylinder turbo found in the Audi A1 and Volkswagen Golf came in second place, with BMW’s 647cc two-cylinder petrol-electric unit in at third.
