2018 Peugeot ‘2008’ spied

A new Peugeot crossover, spawned from GM's ill-fated investment in PSA Peugeot-Citroen, has been spied on public roads in Europe.

The new tall-riding Peugeot shares a lot in common with the next-generation Opel Meriva and Citroen C3 Picasso, all of which will shed some of their people-mover traits in favour of more SUV-like aesthetic.

The Meriva successor was first spotted in September 2015, while the next-gen C3 Picasso was spied in January 2016. Although both of these vehicles have the same silhouette and share hard points, they seem to differ in their design details, with distinct front- and rear-ends, as well as different door pressings.

Up front, the Peugeot version has a more formal set of rectangular headlights and a grille that, thanks to ports on either side, differs quite substantially from the latest Peugeot look.

This Peugeot variant seems to share its door panels and side window graphics with the Opel Meriva, rather than the C3 Picasso.

Although cross-company collaborations like this one generally share engines, rumours indicate that GM and the PSA Group will largely use their own engines.

While others are claiming that this car will be the replacement for the current Peugeot 2008, we're not entirely convinced, given that the current 2008 was introduced in 2013 and received a facelift just this year. The refreshed car will go on sale down under from the fourth quarter of 2016.

It's possible that Peugeot will short-cycle the current 2008, or retail the current and new vehicles alongside each other. Peugeot could alternatively sell the car under a new badge.

The new-generation Opel-Peugeot-Citroen SUVs will be made at GM's factory in Zaragoza, Spain, with production expected to start in late 2016.
