2016 BMW 4 Series pricing and specifications: New engines, sharpened pricing

Australian pricing and details for the updated 2016 BMW 4 Series range have been announced today, bringing new engines, more standard equipment and significant price cuts to echo recent changes to the accompanying 3 Series range.

Available in Australian dealerships later this month, the refreshed 4 Series range starts with the familiar 420i and 420d models, and is now joined by new 430i and 440i variants - which replace the 428i and 435i offered previously.

Headlining updates to the 420i and 420d are standard-fit adaptive M suspension, head-up display, electric folding mirrors, lane departure warning and a 360-degree camera system.

The 420i and 420d coupe and Gran Coupe start $2200 less than their predecessors, at $68,900 and $71,200 respectively. Meanwhile convertible versions are $2500 less than the previous model at $85,900 for the 420i and $88,200 for the 420d.

Fuel consumption in the 420i has been improved to a claimed 5.8L/100km for the coupe and Gran Coupe bodies (down from 6.1L/100km), and 6.2L/100km for the convertible (down from 6.4L/100km). The 420d variants retain their claimed fuel ratings of 4.3L/100km (coupe/Gran Coupe) and 4.7L/100km (convertible) respectively.

The new 430i replaces the 428i, and will be priced at $79,990 for both the coupe and Gran Coupe, with the convertible starting from $96,990. Both price points feature a $2500 reduction over their predecessors.

Benefitting from an additional 5kW, the 430i’s ‘TwinPower’ 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine produces 185kW of power and 350Nm of torque. Fuel consumption has also been reduced to 5.8L/100km (down 0.6L/100km) for roofed models and 6.3L/100km (down 0.4L/100km) for the open-top variant.

The 430i has gained a number of features for the new model year, including 19-inch alloy wheels, Comfort Access, electric lumbar support for driver and front passenger seats along with a nine-speaker HiFi loudspeaker system. The M Sport Package will also be on offer as a no-cost option.

Finally, topping the 4 Series range is the new 440i, which replaces the 435i.

The 440i coupe and Gran Coupe start at $99,990, while the convertible sits at $117,900. These prices are a reduction of $10,000 and $10,100 respectively over the previous 435i.

All variants of the 440i feature BMW's new 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine, boosting power by 15kW to 240kW and with torque increased by 50Nm to 450Nm.

Thanks to the new engine's increased power and torque, the 440i claims a 0-100km/h time of 5.0 seconds, bettering the previous model by 0.1 seconds.

Fuel consumption in the new 440i is a claimed 6.8L/100km for the coupe and Gran Coupe (down 0.6L/100km), and 7.2L/100km for the convertible (down 0.5L/100km).

The improved fuel consumption for the 440i hardtop variants means they qualify for a reduced rate of Luxury Car Tax.

The 440i also gains a number of features over the 430i including heated front seats, parking assistant, active cruise control and adaptive LED headlights as well as an air collar in the convertible.
