2018 Audi RS5 mule spied

An engineering mule for the next-generation Audi RS5 coupe has been photographed in Germany.

Based on the yet-to-be-released next-gen Audi A5 coupe, this prototype sports a few tell tale signs that it's hiding the guts of the high-performance RS variant.

The most obvious are the wheel arch extensions, which can be seen despite the camouflage when the lighting and the viewing angle line up correctly. The units seen here are bolt ons for testing purposes, the final car should have much more neatly integrated flared fenders.

Most of the exterior elements, such as the front and rear bumpers, we believe are pilfered from the next-gen S5. A prototype RS4 wagon spied last month should provide some clues as to the style of the new RS5.

Rumours indicate that the new RS4 and RS5 will be motivated by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 with between 335 and 350 kilowatts of power.

The outgoing RS4 and RS5 twins employed a 331kW/430Nm 4.2-litre V8 that's good for a 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds. A time that's shared with the current-generation S4, so expect the new RS4/RS5 to be a little more brisk.

As is customary, drive will be sent to all four wheels, and stopping power should come courtesy of a braking package with drilled discs and large callipers.

Australia

The next-generation Audi A5 is scheduled to make its debut next month, but the high performance RS5 variant isn't likely to see the light of day in production form until 2017. An Australian introduction isn't likely until late 2017 or early 2018.
