BMW 750d xDrive debuts quad-turbo diesel, no-go for Australia

The BMW 7 Series limousine is the first model in the brand’s line-up to be powered by the company’s new 3.0-litre quad-turbocharged diesel engine.

Following its reveal a fortnight ago, BMW’s new flagship diesel engine ups power by five per cent and reduces average fuel consumption by 11 per cent over the preceding triple-turbo powerplant.

Claimed to be the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine offered in a passenger car, the new engine features multi-stage turbo-charging, four turbo-chargers and common-rail direct injection, while producing an impressive 294kW (400hp) of power and 760Nm of torque.

In the updated 750d xDrive and long-wheelbase 750Ld xDrive, the new unit combines with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission to propel the large 7 Series limousine from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.6 seconds and 4.7 seconds respectively - a 0.3 second improvement over the outgoing triple-turbo diesel.

The new engine achieves this impressive performance while consuming diesel at a claimed 5.7 litres per 100km in the 750d and 5.9 litres per 100km in the 750Ld.

The new 750d xDrive and 750Ld xDrive are scheduled to land in European showrooms in July.

Although not confirmed, we can likely also expect the new quad-turbo diesel to make its way to the X5 and X6 M50d performance variants with a future update.

Australia

A spokesperson from BMW Australia has told CarAdvice that there are currently no plans to bring the 750d or 750Ld xDrive variants to Australia.
