The adoption of the Trailblazer nameplate brings Holden into line with the global offering, and lends this more upmarket updated version some differentiation from its Colorado ute source car.
Naturally, the heavily re-engineered Trailblazer is still a body-on-frame SUV based on the Holden Colorado ute, the mid-life update of which was revealed last week. Like the ute version, the rebranded Trailblazer goes well beyond the typical half-life facelift.
The 2017 Trailblazer gets a new front grille/headlight/bumper/bonnet ensemble, plus new prestige paints, additional chrome and daytime running lights, to differentiate it a little more from its utilitarian roots.
The changes are much greater still inside the seven-seat cabin. Gone is the Colorado 7’s low-rent plastic dash in favour of a more upmarket and premium interior with new dash and instrument design, and more sophisticated materials.
Headlining is a new 8.0-inch touchscreen with new software and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a reversing camera across the board. This stands the Trailblazer in good stead against the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and co.
Arguably as important, or more so, are the engineering changes. As with the Colorado ute, the Trailblazer gets a new suspension setup developed by the Australian engineering team in Victoria, on local roads. Efforts were also made to take the edge off noise, vibration and harshness levels.
Under the bonnet, the 4x4 Trailblazer is expected to carry over the same 2.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 147kW of power and 500Nm of torque. Australian engine specifications are yet to be confirmed. A six-speed auto will again be the gearbox offered, in all likelihood.
Holden will no doubt be hoping that the Trailblazer outsells the Colorado 7, which with 968 sales this year has been comprehensively outsold by the Isuzu MU-X (2251), Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (1445), Toyota Fortuner (1394) and Ford Everest (1234).
Full Holden Trailblazer Australian pricing and specifications will be announced later in the year closer to the launch. For context, the outgoing Colorado 7 retails for $47,990 to $51,490 RRP, though is regularly discounted.
