June proved to another successful month for the Australian car industry. The results showed an overall increase of 11.3% over the same month last year. The biggest news however is the improved large car segment.

The large car segment rose by 18.6% (1945 vehicles), medium car segment managed 21.7% (1323 vehicles), the SUV segment managed 23.7% (1468 vehicles) and the biggest segment of all, small cars, managed a slight increase in sales by 3.9% (396 vehicles).

The results put Toyota once again at the top with a 22.2% dominance of the market (19,047 sales), ahead of Holden 14.5% (12,343) and Ford 10.4% (9006). Mazda (7.5%), Mitsubishi (6.4%), Nissan (6.0%) and Honda (6.0%) were also ahead of last year.

FCAI chief executive Andrew McKellar noted that buyers were no longer scared of larger and fuel hungry vehicles.

"In 2006 the dynamics of the automotive market were dominated by small and light car sales but this year the sales action has been more broadly based - and the July results reinforce that trend," said Mr McKellar.

The final 2007 results are expected to top 1,000,000 vehicles for the first time.
