Car makers line up for Good Design Australia awards

A number of car makers have deemed their latest offerings appealing enough to be a chance for a prize at this year’s Good Design Australia awards.

Last year’s prize, in both the main Good Design Award and the Overall Product Design in the Automotive and Transport category, went to the Tesla Model S. BMW’s i3 was also successful, taking the top award in the Sustainability class.

This year, Volvo Australia has submitted the new XC90 for consideration, which, as the first example of an all-new direction for the brand, could be a strong chance.

Audi has entered its big new Q7 SUV, while the French brands Citroen and Renault have added the funky C4 Cactus and, curiously, the new Trafic van. Not unattractive, but a design award winner? We’ll see.

Mazda’s MX-5, the recently crowned World Car of the Year for 2016, has also been put forward, while Korean car maker Kia has gone with a multi-model assault that includes the new Sorento, Sportage and Optima.

The annual Good Design Awards program is open to all products designed anywhere in the world, but available to buy here in Australia. Companies nominate their own products for judging, with the cost of entry set at $450.

The organisation says that its judging criteria are built around a focus on product design, innovation and creativity.

Final round judging for the 2016 occurs will occur on May 24-26, with an announcement to occur during the Good Design Festival on May 27.
