2016 Audi A4 Avant pricing and specifications

The all-new 2016 Audi A4 Avant mid-sized premium wagon range has just landed in Australia, following in the wheel tracks of the sedan version that launched back in February this year.

Like its predecessor, the new B9-generation A4 Avant is a two-variant affair, kicking off at $63,900 (plus on-roads) with the entry-level, front-driven 2.0 TFSI S tronic and topping out with the high-spec 2.0 TFSI quattro S tronic at $72,900 (plus on-roads).

The revised price points represent a rise of $3900 and $1200 over the last-gen 1.8 S line Plus and 2.0 quattro Sport Plus versions the new pair effectively, and respectively, replaces.

Like its A4 sedan siblings, the new Avant highlights sharper looks, a larger size, improved spaciousness and a boost in technology.

It’s 26mm longer – 12mm of that in wheelbase – than the old Avant, yet is said to be 70kg more lightweight against its predecessors spec for spec. In terms of luggage capacity, the new wagon offers 505 litres of space with the rear seats in play and 1510 litres with the 40:20:40 split-fold rear seats stowed, which is only marginally smaller than the current Q5 SUV (540L and 1560L respectively). An electric tailgate, electric sliding luggage cover and ‘kick motion’ hands-free opening is standard on both models.

Otherwise, specifications and standard-fitment equipment essentially mirrors the A4 four-door range, including the adaptive LED headlights (LED Matrix headlights can be optioned for $1700) and dynamic rear indicator lights.

Standard inside includes MMI Navigation plus infotainment, an 8.3-inch centre screen with touchpad controller, a DVD player, DAB+ digital radio, 10GB music storage, live traffic updates, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone interface, ‘Audi connect’ WiFi hotspot and Google services, three-zone climate control with second-row controls, aluminium trim inlays and ambient lighting. Cruise control is standard.

As with the sedan, the Avant can be fitted with a Technik package ($1700) that adds Audi’s ‘virtual cockpit’ digital driver’s instrumentation and a head-up display, an option Audi Australia expects 50 per cent of buyers with take up.

The complete A4 range comes with five-star ANCAP surety and features a healthy list of standard safety features: eight airbags, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, Exit Warning (a cyclists while parked), rear cross-traffic assist, blind-spot monitoring, pre-sense basic and pre-sense rear collision warning, and hill-holding functionality.

Additionally, an Assistance package ($1900) can be ordered, adding active lane assist, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist (auto throttle, braking and steering), turn assist, collision avoidance (steering assist), pre-sense front (collision warning at up to 250km/h), predictive efficiency assistance and high-beam assist.

As is now tradition, and unlike the four-variant A4 sedan range, there is no diesel option: four-cylinder TDI power is reversed exclusively for the forthcoming, higher-riding A4 Allroad replacement due to go on sale in the third quarter this year.

Instead, both adopt direct-injected 1984cc turbocharged petrol engines: the entry version’s high-compression/low-boost configuration producing 140kW (at 4200-6000rpm) and 320Nm (1450-4200rpm); the quattro’s low-compression/high-boost spec making 185kW (at 5000-6000rpm) and 370Nm (1600-4500rpm) for a 45kW and 50Nm benefit.

Each is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox – there is no manual option. The all-wheel-drive quattro version features a self-locking centre differential and torque vectoring technology.

The more lightweight front-driver (1535kg against 1615kg kerb) comes with a combined fuel consumption claim of 5.6L/100kms, the quattro said to be a full litre thirstier across the same calculation. The flagship all-paw Avant, though, is understandably quicker: 6.0sec for 0-100km/h and a 250km/h top speed compared with the entry Avant’s 7.5sec and 238km/h stats.

Interestingly, there are four different suspension configurations available. A 20mm-lowered passively-damped Sport suspension standard on quattro can be cost-optioned on the entry front-driver, which otherwise gets a ‘standard’ comfort tuning. Both cars, though, can be optioned with a choice of (23mm-lowered) Adaptive sport suspension or (10mm-lowered) Adaptive comfort suspension, at a cost of either $1100 (quattro) or $1700 (front-driver).

Each car sits on 245mm tyres, though the base car gets 18s while the quattro is fitted with 19s – there is a choice of five wheel styles across the range.

An S line sports package can be optioned on either wagon ($5000 for the front-driver, $3200 for the quattro) and includes: 19-inch Audi Sport wheels, S line exterior and interior styling changes, leather/Alcantara trim, a flat-bottom steering wheel and enhanced colour and trim choices.
