Ford EcoBlue turbo-diesel engines revealed

Ford has revealed its next generation of turbo-diesel engines, branded EcoBlue.

The car maker says that the success of its EcoBoost petrol range has driven a number of innovations in the development of its new turbo-diesel design.

Leading the new range will be a 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel that Ford says is cleaner, 10 to 15kg lighter and up to 13 per cent more efficient than the 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi it replaces.

The 2.2-litre turbo-diesel currently serves in the Ford Transit van, and has also been used in the past by models as diverse as the Jaguar X-Type and Land Rover Defender.

The Transit range in Europe will be the first models to employ the new EcoBlue engines.

Ford claims that the new 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine has improved low-range torque at 1250rpm by 20 per cent, improving drivability at city speeds.

And for those concerned about diesel emissions, Ford says the new EcoBlue diesel meets the stringent new Euro 6 emission standards that take effect from September.

Jim Farley, Chairman and CEO of Ford Europe, says: “This new engine lifts fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 [emissions] by over 10 percent in [the] Transit, part of Europe’s best-selling commercial vehicle lineup, lowering costs for our customers”.

Key changes to the design of the EcoBlue engine include a 10mm offset crankshaft to minimise piston load and reduce internal friction.

The new EcoBlue range also boasts an all-new compact turbocharging system, high-pressure fuel injectors, and an integrated inlet manifold that uses mirror-image porting for more precise airflow into the cylinders.

Dominic Evans, Ford Europe’s specialist for noise, vibration and harshness, said that the EcoBlue engine is so refined that it will be the brand’s first commercial vehicle diesel to achieve passenger car levels of NVH.

“We’ve engineered every significant noise-influencing component of this engine to be quieter and smoother, resulting in the most refined diesel commercial vehicles Ford has ever built,” he said.

The new 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel will debut in Ford Europe’s Transit van range, available in several states of tune with a 1.5-litre to be offered later on.

Ford will also introduce the EcoBlue engines to its passenger car range, however it isn’t known which models will receive the new engines and when.

Ford Australia communications director Wes Sherwood told CarAdvice that while the company’s local arm is looking to expand its fuel-saving engine range, there is no news regarding the Australian launch of the new EcoBlue engine range.

“Fuel economy is one of our customers’ top demands,” he said. “We are continuing to expand our range of fuel-efficient engines.”

However, “[there is] no news at this point,” he added.

Currently in Australia, Ford offers a range of ‘Duratorq’ turbo-diesel engines across its passenger and commercial vehicle range.

In its passenger cars, the range includes the 2.0-litre 132kW/400Nm diesel in the Mondeo medium car and Kuga SUV, the 2.7-litre 140kW/440Nm Land Rover-sourced diesel in the larger Territory SUV, and the 3.2-litre 143kW/470Nm diesel in the Everest off-roader.

Ford’s commercial range features a 2.2-litre diesel in the 92kW/350Nm Transit Custom and the 114kW/385Nm Transit vans, while the Ranger ute can be had with the same engine in 118kW/385Nm form and with the larger 3.2-litre diesel.
