Volkswagen T-Prime GTE concept unveiled

The Volkswagen T-Prime GTE has been unveiled at the 2016 Beijing auto show and the crossover concept potentially previews a new range-topping SUV for the brand.

As part of Volkswagen's renewed focus on electrified propulsion, the T-Prime GTE has a plug-in hybrid drivetrain that pairs together a 185kW/370Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 100kW/350Nm electric motor.

Working together, the two motors can provide a maximum of 280kW of power and 700Nm of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

When the 14.1kWh battery pack is fully charged, the T-Prime GTE has a claimed emissions-free driving range of 50 kilometres and an overall fuel economy rating of 2.7L/100km.

Foot to the floor, the T-Prime GTE can reportedly hustle from 0-100km/h in six seconds flat and a hit a top speed of 224km/h.

Based on the MLB platform for front- and all-wheel drive cars with a longitudinal engine, the T-Prime GTE has a length of 5069mm, a width of 2000mm, and stands 1708mm tall.

Despite its large dimensions, the T-Prime GTE has only been equipped with seating for four people. The dashboard does away with traditional buttons, replacing them instead with a large 15.0-inch touchscreen, gesture support, and capacitive switches.

The T-Prime GTE is the latest in a series of SUV concepts from the Wolfsburg-based brand, and which are said to preview a massively expanded SUV range.

The first shot in Volkswagen's assault on the crossover market is the second-generation Tiguan, which, depending on the market, will be available in both standard- and long-wheelbase formats.

Hot on the Tiguan's heels will be a "mid-size SUV for China and the USA". The mid-size SUV, which was snapped recently in near-production guise by our photographers, is expected to feature three rows of seating and draws its inspiration from the CrossBlue concept.

Volkswagen says that the three-row SUV will be followed up by the "successful Touareg and, respectively, a vehicle in the style of the T-Prime Concept GTE".

Sitting underneath the new Tiguan will be a Golf-size crossover inspired by the T-Roc concept and a Polo-class SUV previewed by the T-Cross Breeze.
