Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration concept unveiled, previews new QX50

The Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration concept has been unveiled ahead of its in-the-flesh debut at next week's Beijing auto show.

According to Roland Krueger, president of Infiniti, the QX Sport Inspiration showcases the brand's "daring design philosophy" and its "capabilities in the mid-size SUV segment".

At present that space is occupied by the QX50 SUV. Launched in 2007, and previously known as the Infiniti EX and sold in Japan as the Nissan Skyline Crossover, the rear- and all-wheel drive QX50 was revised last year with the addition of a long-wheelbase variant, which addressed long running complaints about its cramped interior.

The new SUV concept abandons the brand's long-nose SUV design, seen on the QX50 (formerly EX) and the QX70 (previously the FX).

Infiniti has yet to provide any details about the QX Sport Inspiration's drivetrain, but judging by the proportions the concept could be based on a front- and all-wheel drive platform unrelated to the Q50 sedan and Q60 coupe.

Visually, the QX Sport Inspiration draws upon the brand's latest styling playbook, which it dubs 'Powerful Elegance'. Up front, the concept has thin headlights flanking a large grille, while along the sides there's plenty of complex body surfacing and a chromed 'crescent cut' D-pillar.

On the inside, the concept features a minimalist aesthetic with a floating tablet-style infotainment screen, and plenty of brushed aluminium, leather and suede-like substances.

User controls are limited to just a smattering of capacitive buttons on the dashboard, centre tunnel and steering wheel.

We expect to find out more about the Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration when the Beijing auto show kicks off on April 25. Stay tuned for more details.
