2017 Haval H7 set for Australian launch next year

Chinese SUV company Haval expects to launch its new H7 SUV in Australia by the second half of 2017, the company's local arm has confirmed with CarAdvice today.

Signalling the importance of the Australian market in Haval’s global expansion, ours will be the first right-hand-drive region to get the H7.

The newest offering in Haval’s growing SUV-focused range will make its Chinese-market debut at next week’s Beijing motor show, after having first appeared in its final production form at last year’s Shanghai show.

In China, the H7 will be offered with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine offering 169kW and 350Nm of torque, marking a slight improvement over the 160kW and 324Nm offered by the 2.0-litre turbo four in the larger H8 and H9 models currently offered in Australia.

Power is sent to an all-wheel drive system through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Haval claims a 0-100km/h time of 9.0 seconds and a top speed of 220km/h.

Haval is also talking up the H7’s Chinese-market safety features, which will include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, 360 degree view, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and forward collision warning.

Local specifications are still to be confirmed, but with safety a key focus for Australian buyers, we can likely expect all of the above kit to be standard here.

The H7 will slot in beneath the large H8, arriving as a new mid-sized option above the compact H2. The H7’s wheelbase measures 2850mm - 150mm longer than the Mazda CX-5 - while the H8 rides on a 2915mm wheelbase.

With the H8 priced between $41,990 and $48,990, we can likely expect the H7 to land in the mid-$30k range. Local pricing won’t be confirmed for some time yet, though. And, with the small H2 recently given a price cut, we might expect similar steps with the H8 between now and the H7’s debut next year.

Watch for more on the H7 to come with next week’s Beijing motor show launch.
