Koenigsegg to contest Nurburgring record with One:1 hypercar

Koenigsegg has confirmed plans to make a new attempt on the production-car lap record at the Nurburgring - but not just yet.

This isn’t the first time Koenigsegg has wanted to take its 1014Kw One:1 hypercar around the famous track in an attempt to dethrone the current record holder, the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Last year its plans were cut short when a fatal accident in 2015 saw speed limits were applied to a number of sections of the ‘Green Hell’ circuit. It also led to the car maker scrapping its accompanying documentary ‘Apex’.

Just two weeks ago, those speed limits were lifted, opening the door for manufacturers to claim the revered title.

However, according to a statement from the car maker, there’s still a fair way to go until its One:1 hits the road at the ‘Ring. Most important is finding a driver with ‘intimate knowledge' of the track, as well as the skills to wrangle the high-powered One:1.

“This year, we’re starting again and it takes months of planning and preparation,” Koenigsegg's Steve Wade said.

“Intimate knowledge of the track takes a long, long time to build and we are aiming to secure a driver with maximum experience at this most demanding of tracks.”

Koenigsegg has not indicated when it will attempt the lap record, saying that if it is seen at the Nurburgring later this month, not to get too excited, there’s still a long way to go.
