Ford to transform Dearborn HQ into high-tech mega campus

Ford will expand its worldwide headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, into a modern, green and high-tech facility, outlining a 10-year construction plan that mirrors the car maker’s transition into an automotive and mobility company.

The plans will see the 70 buildings and 30,000 employees that make up the current facility, consolidated into two primary locations; a product campus and a World Headquarters campus.

The company’s current head office, known unofficially as The Glass House, was built in 1956.

Ford’s new product campus will utilise the current Ford Research and Engineering Center and transform it into a modern and innovative environment designed to accommodate 24,000 employees, double the current number. The product campus will also feature an all-new Design Centre.

The revamped World Headquarters will receive 120,000 square-meters of reworked space, employee-friendly environments, a more technologically connected office space and updated common areas, including cafes.

The company says it will utilise modern eco-conscious technologies like geothermal heating and cooling, along with rainwater capture, in its mission to cut energy consumption by 50 per cent. The focal point of these efforts will be the Sustainability Showcase building.

When the renovations are complete, employees will benefit from outdoor recreation areas like softball and soccer fields, green spaces, autonomous car shuttles, walkways, bikeways and a total of 650,000 square-metres of rebuilt office space.

While Ford’s core business will continue to see it invest heavily in the design, manufacture and marketing of its range of cars, SUVs and trucks, in the years to come Ford is planning on becoming a world leader in the mobility and autonomous vehicle market.

“As we transition to an auto and a mobility company, we’re investing in our people and the tools they use to deliver our vision.

“Bringing our teams together in an open, collaborative environment will make our employees’ lives better, speed decision-making and deliver results for both our core and emerging businesses,” Ford president and CEO Mark Fields said.

Construction on the product campus is set to begin this month, with Ford claiming that the majority of renovations will be completed by 2023. Work on the World Headquarters campus is scheduled to begin in 2021 and conclude in 2026.
