Citroen C6:: China-only flagship revealed ahead of Beijing debut

Images of Citroen’s second-generation C6 sedan have surfaced online after it was presented in China this week, ahead of a Beijing motor show reveal.

Codenamed X81, the new C6 revives the nameplate after the original version was retired in 2012.

While the first C6 wore a classically eccentric French design, this new generation appears far more conventional in its look.

Citroen has based the new C6 on Chinese manufacturer Dongfeng’s A9 sedan, which rides on PSA’s modular EMP2 platform, an architecture shared with the Peugeot 308, 408 (sold in developing Asian and South American markets) and the Citroen C4 Picasso.

The C6 also looks fairly similar to the A9, with a large front grille that joins the headlights at each end, and slim taillights that are connected by a thin chrome strip.

The joint-venture project with Dongfeng follows the Chinese carmaker’s acquisition of a 14 per cent stake in PSA Peugeot Citroen in March 2014, which is also set to spawn another global platform that will underpin the next-generation Peugeot 208 and Citroen C3.

While there are no details about what will be offered under the bonnet, Chinese sources have reported that the C6 will likely offer a range of 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines.

More information about the new Citroen C6 will come to fruition when the car makes its debut at the Beijing motor show at the end of the month.
