2016 Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet to land as Australia’s most expensive Merc

Hot on the heels of our international launch drive of the Mercedes-Benz S500 Cabriolet and Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet variants, speculative local pricing has indicated that the range-topping Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet is likely to become the most expensive Mercedes-Benz on sale in Australia. Full pricing and specification will be released by the German brand closer to the local launch of the S-Class Cabriolet in September.

There will be three S-Class Cabriolet models available in Australia - S500, AMG S63 and AMG S65 - and Mercedes-Benz has told us to expect an approximate $30,000 price premium over the list prices for the Coupe variants.

While we don't know exact Australian specification yet, we do know that Airmatic suspension will be standard for all Australian cars, and the Coupe's clever 'Curve Tilting Function' suspension will not be available for the Cabriolet.

All S-Class cabriolets will come standard with the exclusive Nappa leather trim and all will be four-seat models with the large centre console splitting the rear bench. CarAdvice understands a conventional bench-seat will be available to customers as a special order for S500 variants of the Cabriolet.

The range will be topped out by the AMG S65 Cabriolet, with 463kW and 1000Nm and a list price around the $522,000 mark, making its starting price the most expensive (perhaps exclusive is a more apt word) in the Mercedes-Benz catalogue by some margin.

The ultra-luxurious Mercedes-Maybach S600, by comparison, is priced from a 'mere' $448,610 in Australia, while the SL 65 AMG comes closer at $480,610.

The AMG S65 Cabriolet will be order only, and the company already has four orders in the books.

Mercedes-Benz Australia PR Director David McCarthy reckons the Cabriolet will sell in smaller numbers than the Coupe, which sold 100 units in 2015.

"We think the Cabriolet will sell around 60 in the first year after release, and then drop back into the mid 30s after that," McCarthy said.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet will go on sale in Australia in September.
